A little about “New York Mike”:
Michael Raymond grew up on Long Island and attended his first Yankees game at the age of six. It was 1960, and Mike had the chance to see Mickey, Yogi, Roger, and Whitey play in the "House That Ruth Built". Mickey Mantle hit a home run that day and instantly became Mike’s favorite player.
From then on, Mike was hooked. He listened to Yankees radio broadcasts daily and watched the team on television whenever he had the chance. He also began collecting anything related to Mickey Mantle. He always dreamed of owning Mantle’s 1951 Bowman rookie card, but it remained the one card he was never able to acquire.
Later in life, Mike began participating in card breaks, although he was often frustrated that the Yankees were always the most expensive team to claim. On Mother’s Day in 2016, he complained to his family that he had received nine autographed rookie cards of “some guy named Judge” in the same break. He gave one to his oldest daughter, telling her not to get too excited because it probably would not be worth much in the future.
During the final decade of his life, Mike traveled to Cooperstown each year for the Baseball Hall of Fame induction ceremonies. Oddly enough, one of his favorite Cooperstown memories did not involve a Yankee. It was meeting Pete Rose and telling him that he deserved to be in the Hall of Fame.
Shortly before he passed away, Mike attended Pinstripe Pride in New Jersey. There, he met dozens of former and current Yankees. Most importantly, he had the opportunity to share stories, display his memorabilia, and connect with other passionate fans.
Although Mike’s daughters are sad to see their father’s collection go, they hope these special pieces will bring their new caretakers the same joy they brought their dad.
