Three vintage Sports Illustrated issues with Mickey Mantle on the cover, spanning the middle and late years of his career. July 2, 1962, “Mickey Mantle: Indispensable Yankee.” A classic smiling portrait of Mantle in pinstripes, from the season he won his third and final MVP award. It shows wear typical of a subscription copy: surface creasing and rubbing across the cover, edge and spine wear, a mailing label at lower left, and the cover detached from the spine toward the bottom. June 21, 1965, “New York Yankees: End of an Era.” Mantle tips his cap with a bat on his shoulder, a cover that marked the end of the Yankee dynasty. It has a mailing label with the address partially blacked out, plus light edge and corner wear. May 8, 1967, “The Tangled American League.” Mantle, playing first base, puts the tag on White Sox star Ken Berry diving back to the bag. The issue also carries the famous “Ali Says No” corner banner from the week Muhammad Ali refused induction into the Army. It has a mailing label and light wear.
